Federal Army approval on the receiver, barrel renumbered, excellent barrel condition. In the mid-1960s, the question of introducing a sniper rifle arose in the armed forces. The result of this long-term discussion and development was the SSG69 system Steyr-Mannlicher. As a short-term interim solution, 98k carbines were equipped with a half stock and a quadruple scope, designated SSG 98k, and introduced. These weapons were manufactured and fired for the Federal Army in Ferlach at the end of the 1960s. Our example is a dismantled Saltu rifle, which was fitted with a working barrel again but was not reproofed. The SSG 98k were deactivated and given to shooting clubs by the army.
